Abstract: In a series of papers, Donaldson studied the constant scalar curvature Kaehler metrics on toric surfaces and proved the existence under the condition of stability. This result was generalized to extremal metrics by Bohui Chen, An-Min Li and Li Sheng. In a series of talks, I will present their results. I will provide necessary geometric and analytic backgrounds and discuss the role of stability. I will also present some recent extensions to higher dimensional toric varieties.
